About Backwoods Gatherings
Our Story
Backwoods Gatherings is a family-owned and operated venue
nestled in the Thumb of Michigan; God's Country.
The Smith Family has raised their 6 children on the family property of 100+ acres for over 20 years. Although their children have flown from the nest, family traditions of coming together with a smile to create memories has continued. We have opened our gates to the community to host annual family friendly events.
Backwoods Bluegrass Fay Fest is where it all started in 2005 for the celebration of Fays 60th birthday. After a few years of honoring her birthday in the Barn, we experienced a barn fire. Which gave us time to mourn and embrace the season of growth in our faith, family and community.
During that time our family has established
Wagon Wheel Express a family Restaurant and Catering
in our local community.
We have now rebuilt in 2022 & celebrate the life and
memory of Fay & Bill Hunter, & all who have been called home before us.
We continue to celebrate the life of F.A.Y behind it all.

Our Family had experienced a Barn Fire in 2010. Which we endured a lot of loss of our "things". Although we embraced our faith & trusted in the circumstances and where they would lead us.
Money Cant Buy Back your Youth when you're old. Or a friend when you're lonely or a heart that's grown Cold.
As the years passed, the plans of restoration grew. As a family we continue to come together to make an impact on our family homestead & the community around us.
Board by board we envision the beauty we once dwelled in, with the excitement of new, the Lord has blessed us.
The worlds richest man is a pauper at times, compared to a man with a satisfied mind.
May these walls be one of strength, Grace & Community as we share the blessed poured upon us.
